Cell Phone Policy

Franklin D. Roosevelt School PS/MS 34

Cellphone Policy
2024-25

Parents/Guardians,

As you may know, Franklin D. Roosevelt School PS/MS 34 has a “no cellphone policy”. The purpose
has been to minimize distractions throughout the school day. We have been understanding of
families’ need to communicate with their children while traveling to and from the school building. In
continuation with our policy, all students will be required to submit their cellphone upon arrival to
the school building. Each cellphone will be collected by a trained staff member and will be securely
stored until the end of the school day when they will be returned to the student. In the event of any
emergency drills, cellphones will be brought with the staff, so they are accessible to students if
necessary. If you need to contact your child, please call the school’s main office at 212-228-4433 and
the message will be delivered to your child in a timely manner. Again, the purpose of this policy is to
minimize distractions in the classroom and throughout the school day creating a more effective
learning environment for all.

First Infraction: If a student does not turn in their cellphone upon entry to the school building and
is found with it throughout the day, it will be confiscated and given back to the student at the end of
the day. It will also be documented on the Online Occurrence Reporting System (OORS), which
stores student infractions.

Second Infraction: If a student does not turn in their cellphone upon entry to the school building
and is found with it throughout the day, it will be confiscated and only a parent/guardian/family
member listed on the Emergency Blue Card will be able to pick it up. It will also be documented on
the Online Occurrence Reporting System (OORS), which stores student infractions.
Third Infraction: If a student does not turn in their cell phone upon entry to the school building
and is found with it throughout the day, it will be confiscated and only a parent/guardian/family
member listed on the Emergency Blue Card will be able to pick it up. Additionally, disciplinary
responses will be taken, and it will be documented on the Online Occurrence Reporting System
(OORS), which stores student infractions.
